Communication Modes for Ultrasonic Water Meters: 4G/NB-IoT vs. LoRaWAN

2026-04-17

In the development of smart water systems, selecting the appropriate communication protocol is crucial for ensuring data stability and cost control. Currently, the mainstream remote communication methods for ultrasonic water meters are categorized into cellular networks (4G/NB-IoT) and non-licensed spectrum technologies (LoRaWAN).

4G/NB-IoT: Wide Coverage and Carrier-Grade Reliability

NB-IoT and 4G technologies rely on the base stations of telecommunication operators. Their primary advantage is plug-and-play functionality, eliminating the need for utilities to deploy their own gateways.

  • Application Scenarios: Ideal for urban residential areas, high-rise buildings, and scattered industrial/commercial users. Due to strong signal penetration and extensive coverage, they perform excellently in dense urban centers where high-frequency data transmission (such as real-time pressure monitoring) is required.

  • Limitations: They involve recurring annual data fees paid to operators, and communication quality may be compromised in remote mountainous areas or deep underground pits where base station signals are weak.

LoRaWAN: Autonomous Control and Low Operational Costs

LoRaWAN utilizes a point-to-multipoint star topology, requiring water utilities to install their own gateways to collect data.

  • Application Scenarios: Best suited for rural water supply, large industrial parks, remote mining areas, or environments with complex underground structures. In these locations, where operator signals may be spotty, utilities can achieve deep signal coverage by deploying their own gateways. Furthermore, since there are no monthly data subscription fees, it offers lower long-term costs for budget-conscious, high-density closed environments.

  • Limitations: Utilities must bear the responsibility of gateway construction and maintenance, and the data transmission frequency is generally lower than that of NB-IoT.
